BRENDA WOODLAND
Biographical Statement and Accomplishments
Brenda Woodland is an African American Woman who dedicates her life to saving the lives of individuals at risk within the community.
In 1977, Ms. Woodland started her journey as a Roving Leader with the Department of Recreation. She later worked as an International Counselor for Saint Elizabeth's Hospital and taught a multitude of male and female clients of various national origins life skills, money management, self-esteem, _and self-confidence classes.
In 1995, she worked as a substance abuse counselor with SYMBAS TEAM, an outpatient substance abuse program that focused on saving individuals spirits, bodies, and minds.
There, she held one-on-one group sessions and taught classes to men and women between the ages of 18-45 how to become better communicators, anger management skills, parenting skills, and how to develop positive self-esteem.
Currently Ms. Woodland works with for the Alliance of Concerned Men, located in Washington, D.C. She counsels youth who have been incarcerated, former gang members, pregnant teens, and individuals who live in public housing developments. She is a life skills consultant and has developed a curriculum that can be used in prisons, throughout the D.C.
Public School Systems and other agencies. In addition to the many responsibilities she endures, this educated African American woman volunteers as an activity coordinator/life skills facilitator at the Better Way Program, a spiritual, outpatient abstinence drug and alcohol program located in Washington, DC.
To acknowledge her outstanding contributions, Ms. Woodland received an outstanding community service award from the Alliance of Concern Men. She also is the recipient of an outstanding leadership development award from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital and has obtained a license from The Customer Service Driven Board of Professionals in addiction counseling.
As a 52-year-old single parent, Ms. Woodland has raised a 24-year-old daughter who is a graduate of Frank W. Ballou Senior High School and Bowie State University. She knows first hand that raising a child in today’s society is difficult. However, with God’s guidance and receiving positive support from individuals who care and anything is possible.
